Pain Clinics and Procedures

I've been observing at our local Pain Clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I've seen blocks of the cervical spine, shoulder, and lumbar spine so far.

I've also observed two thoracenteses, a pigtail catheter insertion, a modified barium swallow x 2  and barium enema. It was nice NOT being the Tech for the BE for a change :-)

Pigtail Catheter Chest Insertion

Today I'll be observing a pigtail catheter chest insertion for loculated perfusion of the left chest. Same patient had a thoracentesis done two days ago.

A Day in the Life of a Radiology Practitioner Assistant

Here's a good article regarding a typical day for an RPA. Although it was written way back in 2003, it still shows some insight into the profession and there aren't very many articles on the topic.

Radiologist Group on LinkedIn for Networking

There is a group on LinkedIn called Radiologist Assistant for those of you interested in networking with other RAs.

Link here. It currently has 17 members. As a new member to the group, I've already had some nice feedback on my posts.

Radiology Assistant vs Nurse Practitioner vs Physician Assistant

According to  Journal of American College of  Radiology 2012 Apr;9(4):270-4, the average curriculum for the Radiologist Assistant "includes a core education that is comparable with the physician assistant and nurse practitioner curricula, with the exception of prescriptive authority and health promotion and disease prevention. The RA curriculum adds instruction in radiobiology, radiation safety, radiologic procedures, fluoroscopic unit operation and safety, and radiopharmaceuticals."
